On July 20, 2026, our family’s life shifted in a single moment when my husband, James Badue, was struck by lightning.

James was hospitalized following the lightning strike and has continued to face significant health challenges as a result. What was once a normal part of our everyday life has changed dramatically, and our family is now facing a journey we never expected to take.

If you know James, you know he has always been a builder and a helper. Before the accident, he worked in construction remodeling homes, tended to our small family farm, and took great pride in providing for our family. That same dedication shaped his commitment to serving his community.

For years, James worked alongside community organizations, led initiatives supporting formerly incarcerated people, mentored youth, and focused his efforts on helping people from underserved backgrounds. Whether he was working with his hands, providing for his family, or advocating for others, James has always taken pride in building, providing, and helping people move forward.

That’s what makes this new reality so painful for him and our family.

Since the lightning strike, James has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and has been dealing with extreme chronic pain, severe fatigue, functional seizures, nerve damage, and neurological issues that affect his memory, balance, and mobility. The hard physical work he once took so much pride in is no longer possible. Even basic daily routines can now take a significant toll on his body, and he needs substantial assistance getting through the day.

As his wife, I have stepped into the role of his primary caregiver while trying to keep life as normal as possible for our children. Between managing his daily care, traveling to medical appointments, helping him with everyday activities, and taking care of our children, I have not been able to work consistently either.

We are currently seeking appropriate neurological care, therapy, and rehabilitation resources to help James manage the effects of this life-changing injury and work toward regaining as much independence and quality of life as possible. We remain hopeful that with the right medical care, therapy, family support, and time, James can continue making progress in his recovery.

We are applying for disability benefits, but with a 6-to-8-month wait, we cannot bridge the gap alone. Moving from North Carolina to Texas will place us near family who can help with childcare, transportation, daily responsibilities, and James’s care while he focuses on recovery.

We are asking for your help to raise $27,000. Asking for help is deeply humbling. W e have always taken pride in providing for ourselves and serving others, but we simply cannot carry this alone anymore.

Your support help will cover:
  • Relocation, moving costs, and housing setup in Texas
  • Medical bills, treatments, medications, and equipment
  • Transportation to appointments and daily family needs (childcare, groceries, utilities)
  • Basic living expenses while James recovers and we await disability approval

This funding will also give our children stability and gives James the room to heal without worrying about how we will make it through each month.

If you cannot donate, sharing this with your friends, church, or community is just as meaningful. Please keep James and our family in your prayers as he works toward regaining his health and independence.

Thank you for reading our story and standing with us.

With gratitude,
