Help Benny Walk Again: Emergency Surgery for Our Beloved Dog

Hello friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers, We are Matthew and Serena, and we’ve been lucky to share our lives with our sweet dog, Benny, who holds such a special place in our hearts. On Thursday, May 15th, 2025 our sweet and loving dog Benny was rushed to a veterinary hospital after showing signs of paralysis in his rear hind legs. When we spoke to his doctor, we received the worst news that we could imagine. We were informed that Benny would need emergency surgery, having been diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease. IVDD occurs when a disc in the spine shifts, which causes pain, nerve damage, and paralysis of the back legs. Regardless of Bennys age being 4 years old, in great health, IVDD is something that typically impacts dachshunds. After receiving three opinions, we were advised to proceed with the procedure. This requires an MRI, anesthesia, and two days of post operative care in the hospital. We were quoted 14k+ for the entire process (exams, MRI, surgery, post-operation care for 48-72 hours, etc.) We are in the process of moving, wedding planning, and moving forward in our careers. Regardless of all of this, Benny’s health is put above all else. We want to continue to provide him a happy, healthy, and long life. Unfortunately we do not have health insurance for Benny and are asking for any type of support with the costs. Although the surgical procedure does not guarantee Benny will regain full function of his hind legs, this was the best option, as it gives him a higher chance to be able to walk again. We did not expect any of this to happen, and hope that Benny has a quick recovery. We pray he will be able to be his most energetic self again, the Benny that we all love and know.
